Midterm meeting

The NMDB midterm meeting will be held in Kiel from December 3-5, 2008 at the Institute for Experimental and Applied Physics of the Christian-Albrechts Universität zu Kiel (overview of the location).

Scientific session

On wednesday, december 3rd, 2008, a scientific session about Neutron Monitor data registration, quality control of NM data, and alert systems will be held. The talks will be 20min each (plus 5-10 minutes for discussion), so we can have 12-16 talks during this one day session, one talk per NMDB participant. Please submit your abstracts by October 31, 2008.

Kiel

Getting there and around

Kiel is easy to reach by Car, train, bus, ferry, as well as by airplane. If you arrive by plane, the nearest airport with regular flights is Hamburg. You would then take the Kielius bus service which takes to to Kiel central station or directly to your Hotel (with a Kiel combi ticket or the KielExx express bus). If you arrive by train or ferry, you will arrive at the central station or (with the ferries from Gothenburg and Oslo) very near to the center. You can continue your travel by taxi or by public transport. Tickets are available at the bus driver, tickets for multiple trips or a whole week are available at the central bus station and special shops. Some hotels give you a free bus ticket.

Hotels

Kiel has many hotels in all categories, I can not list them all here, so I will only list a few ones that I know of. If you book a hotel in the downtown area (between the Central Train Station and Alter Markt) it will be easy to get to the University by public transport.

• bekpek: youth hostel style, very affordable, close to the institute, bicycles for rent
• Hotel Duvelsbek: close to the university, restaurants, Forstbaumschule, but no convenient bus connection
• Hotel Berliner Hof: close to the central train station and downtown, direct bus connection
• Hotel Maritim: close to the Kieler Foerde
• Steigenberger Conti Hansa: close to downtown and the Kiele Foerde, direct bus connection
• Hotel Astor and Basic Hotels, Best Western: downtown, direct bus connection
• Rabe's Hotel: close to downtown
• Wiking: close to downtown
• Intercity: at the Central Train Station, direct bus connection
• Birke: close to the Autobahn
